Andrew Callaghan responds to sexual assault allegations: ‘Devastated’

2 min read

Indie filmmaker Andrew Callaghan, known for his man-on-the-street Channel 5 YouTube interview and HBO documentary “This Place Rules,” has addressed allegations of sexual misconduct made against him in early January.

In a statement sent by Dr diversity, Callaghan’s legal representative said, “Andrew is devastated that he is being accused of any form of physical or emotional coercion. Conversations about stress and compliance are crucial and Andrew wants to have these conversations, so he can learn and grow. While being open to every dynamic explanation and appropriate communication from all involved is important, repeated requests for money should not be part of this conversation.”

The statement continued, “In addition, balanced communication is paramount to any dynamic relationship and Andrew promises to get better at this, while reminding his listeners that even with one involved partner, there are always more than one side to a story. Andrew is the right professional. Totally committed to working with him so he can grow and improve as himself and as a person, especially understanding his growing platform and the vulnerabilities it brings.

A woman named Carolyn Ellis alleged that Callaghan stayed at her home and “wore [her] Down” with requests to have sex until she agrees.”[He] I finally got my nod because he defeated me,” he said in a TikTok video. “Seeing this man as a social justice warrior, getting a platform that cares about human rights is even harder to recover from the trauma I went through every day. You support him. Shouldn’t.”

A few days later, another woman named Dana made a similar complaint. She alleged that Callaghan pressured her into having sex in his car after previous intercourse that she found “mean” and “humiliating”. “I told him to stop. I asked him to get away from me multiple times,” he said in a video posted on TikTok. “He tried to put my hand down his pants and I was fighting him this time, telling him to please stop.”

HBO released Callaghan’s documentary “This Place Rules” on December 30, and the film was produced by Tim Heidecker, Eric Warheim and A24. On January 12, Heidecker addressed the allegations against Callaghan and said he had “no plans” to work with her again.

“We are aware of the allegations. We take them very seriously. It has been very sad and disappointing, to say the least. I just want to clarify a few things. We have no professional relationship with Andrew at this time and have no plans to have a relationship with him,” Heidecker said on his podcast. Worked very hard on it. But it’s just a movie, and I want to say that we believe these women who have come forward and, of course, absolutely condemn the kind of behavior that Andrew is being accused of.”
