‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ tops the UK box office

Disney’s James Cameron’s blockbuster “Avatar: The Way of Water” remained at the UK and Ireland box office for a fourth straight weekend with £5.8 million ($7.1 million) and is now running at £57.2 million per comScore.

In its second weekend, in second place, Sony’s “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” scored a strong £1.3 million for a total of £6.2 million. Sony is third and fourth in the chart. “Matilda the Musical”, which collected £1.1 million in its seventh weekend for a total of £23.9 million, came in third. “A Man Called Auto,” starring Tom Hanks, debuted in fourth place with £1.08 million.

Rounding out the top five was Piece of Magic’s concert film “Andre Rieu In Dublin 2023,” which debuted with £732,770. Another debut, Universal’s “Teal,” was sixth with £327,496.

On the back of its strong showing on the BAFTA longlist, MUBI’s “Aftersun” climbed to No. 10 on the charts with £91,252 for a total of £1.2 million.

Among the new releases, Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” starring Olivia Colman, opens Monday, Jan. 9, instead of a traditional weekend bow.

This coming weekend features two wide releases, both of which Universal is opening in more than 300 locations – the awards season opener “Tár,” directed by Todd Field and starring Cate Blanchett, Nina Hosse and Naomi Merlant; and Gerard Johnstone’s horror “M3gan,” in which a robotics engineer at a toy company creates a lifelike doll that begins to take on a life of its own.

Altitude is releasing the Nicolas Cage-starrer western “The Old Way”, while BFI Distribution bows to Mark Jenkin’s Cannes title “Ennis Men”.

It’s the week of the Indian harvest festival Pongal and Sankranti, with five releases from the country, four of which star huge stars from the south of the country. Vijay stars in Vamshi Paidipally’s Tamil-language action family drama “Varisu”, released by Ahimsa Entertainment, while Ajith Kumar starrer H. Vinoth’s Tamil-language action heist film “Thunivu”, distributed by Bollen Cinemas.

Megastar Chiranjeevi headlines KS Ravindra’s Telugu-language action comedy “Waltair Veeraiya”, while cult star Nandamuri Balakrishna Gopichand Malini leads Telugu-language action drama “Veer Seema Reddy”. Both titles are published by DreamZ Entertainment UK

The only Bollywood release during the festival frame – Asman Bharadwaj’s comedy crime drama “Kutte”, starring Naseeruddin Shah, Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, Konkana Sen Sharma and Radhika Madan – is being released by YRF Distribution.
