Kenneth Branna’s “Belfast” won the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The Platform Jury Award is directed by Camilla Andini at “Unite”, and the People’s Choice Documentary Award winner is “The Rescue”, directed by E Chai Vasarhelli and Jimmy Chin. The People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award went to “Titan” directed by Julia Ducarnau.
“Our first exhibition in Belfast at TIFF was one of the most memorable experiences of my entire career,” Branagh said in his welcome speech. “Belfast was so deeply connected to Canadian filmmakers that it was absolutely irresistible to me and Jamie Dornan, and we talked about a memorable night of laughter and tears in your great city. Thanks to Focus Features and Universal for doing this, they have been incredible partners. Thanks to Cameron Bailey, an Irish name, if ever there was one, for organizing us with such hospitality and sensitivity that went from projectors to volunteers through the whole team in that amazing city.
TIFF co-chairs Joanna Vicente and Cameron Bailey said, “2021 brought an exceptional selection of films that excited festival audiences around the world.” “Our lineup features numerous female powerhouses as well as new voices in filmmaking as well as favorite writers. TIFF welcomes guest press, industry, international stars and directors back to the city and to the cinema. The wide range of cinematic storytelling around the world is evidenced by the uniqueness of the films. We are grateful and proud of this festival. ”
