“Avatar: The Way of Water” is still pulling in viewers at the domestic box office, maintaining a substantial lead against the competition as it holds its fifth weekend at No. 1.
Disney and 20th Century Studios’ sci-fi smash added $7 million on Friday, pushing its domestic total to an impressive $538.8 million. The film is looking to add roughly $36 million through the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. For the three-day frame ending Sunday, “Avatar 2” dropped nearly 36% from last weekend.
Certainly “The Way of Water” isn’t projecting the same high staying power as its predecessor: James Cameron’s 2009 holiday release rode a wave of word-of-mouth with week-to-week drops in January that never ballooned past 27%. However, “The Way of Water” is currently outpacing its previous entry, with a total of $538 million which is more than the roughly $500 million that the first “Avatar” collected over MLK weekend in 2010.
More to come…
