Brandy Carlyle, Stargill Simpson and the late John Prin were among the kudo recipients at the 20th Annual Americana Honors and Awards on Wednesday night, who returned privately to the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville after being declared online last year due to the epidemic.

Even without releasing a new album – yet (coming October 1) – Carlyle was nominated for Best Artist of the Year, an honor he previously won 201. Received in

John Prince won the Posthumous Artist Award in 2020 – but that doesn’t mean he won praise from the American Music Association because he qualified for a (probably) final trophy for this year’s song. He was awarded it for “I Remember Everything”, his single final recording; Co-author Pat McLaughlin shared the award.

Stargill Simpson & # 39; s album of the year went to “Cutin Grass – Volume. 1” (Butcher Shop Session). This was not the first time this category had won; The past artist, as well, got that honor back in 2015.

Not everyone who picked the trophy was a repeat winner in his category. Black Pumas wins doubles / group of the year for the first time. Last year it went to the top women, a group that included Carlyle, who won a total of three awards in 2020. Black Pumas didn’t stop last year, though – they did win for Emerging Artist of the Year in 2020.

Following in the footsteps of Black Pumas, this year’s emerging work was Harley Cricket. The Texas singer / songwriter may be breaking new ground – the album he released last week, “Music City USA”, is his tenth album in six years – but the Indie artist has gained more prominence recently.

Violin and fiddle player Christine Weber was named instrument of the year.

The previously announced “Honor,” aka Lifetime Achievement Award, went to Memphis Spirit Great Carla Thomas, Cab ‘Mo’, Fisk Jubilee Singer, Producer / Engineer Trina Shomeker, and Mavericks.

The show, which aired on Circle All Access, NPR’s website and SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country Channel, featured Carlyle, Crockett, Jason Isabel, Alison Russell, Amethyst Kia, Valerie June, Steve Earl, Margo Price and Sarah.

Other guests included “CBS This Morning” host Anthony Mason, who presented the award to Carlyle, and shooter Jennings, who accepted Simpson’s award in his absence. Kifer Sutherland has accepted Black Pumas. Fiona Prine, widow of John Prine and president of Oh Boy Records, received the Song of the Year award from Joe Henry and Aoif O’Donovan on her behalf.
