Shortly after it was announced that BTS and Big Hit Entertainment had donated লাই 1 million to Black Lives Matter to BTS Armwy, the group’s followers, who had pledged to join the grant, met and did so within 24 hours.
The feat follows a recent attempt by K-Pop fans to adopt the hashtag #WhiteLeviMeter, drowning out white-supremacist messages with irrational or anti-racist posts, and flooding the Dallas Police Department’s iWatch Dallas app with K-pop content. The move demonstrated the strong social-media power of fans and was met with widespread approval online on Wednesday morning.
Similarly, BTS ARMY has achieved its strides as a huge global influence and its efforts to match the groups were completed within a day of the news, with 35,609 donors paying 1, 1,026,531. The donation project was founded by a volunteer in the One in Army who came together in love with BTS to help organizations around the world. They have been organizing monthly charitable events and #Machamillion’s efforts have enabled everyone to quickly create a way together to track donated donations.
This remarkable success came with the closure of BTS YouTube’s “Favorite Class of 2020”, where the group, as well as people like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, were among the guests of the widely watched program. Additional guests included Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and many more. Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama were also present as the couple appeared together for the first time on the same virtual stage as part of a ceremony.
