2 min read

Caroline von Kuhn, former director of the Sundance Institute, has been appointed executive director of the Greek non-profit Oxbelly.

Producer and founder of Faliro House, Christos V. Founded by Constantakapoulos, Oxbelly is known for its Screenwriters and Directors Labs — which run under the artistic direction of Athena Rachel Sangari — and attracts several international filmmakers to Greece every summer. Past participating mentors include Maren Ade, Michael Almereyda, Paul Thomas Anderson, Willem Dafoe, Dee Rees and Lulu Wang.

Von Kuhn will help Oxbelly expand its operations and break the traditional lab model with an annual gathering of international creatives.

“Oxbelly was founded with the vision of building an international community of world makers based on the values of generosity and inclusion inherent in Greek hospitality,” Konstantakapoulos said. “I can’t think of a better person than Carolyn to lead Oxbelly into our next chapter, as we expand our programs, serve and empower storytellers in the creative arts on their own terms.”

Von Kuhn added: “I am delighted to be joining Oxbelly in 2019. The warm, inclusive hospitality that is so quintessentially Greek, where the most talented but unproven colleagues and some of our heroes in cinema can exchange ideas as colleagues is something I’ve done. Never witnessed the realization so successfully. It is a privilege to join Christos in this movement built on the foundations of both ancient and contemporary culture in Greece, grounded in generosity, inclusivity and a deep commitment to story and craft. At a time of both opportunity and need for bold independent artists and new models to support their work, Oxbelly is uniquely positioned to lead these efforts.”

Von Kuhn is an industry veteran who focuses on filmmaker programs and independent film financing initiatives. Most recently, he served as Director of Industry and Catalyst at the Sundance Institute, where he expanded Sundance’s independent film financing from an annual three-day forum to a year-long investor curriculum for both seasoned and new funders alike.

Prior to Sundance, von Kuhn was Director of Artist Development at SFFILM (San Francisco Film Society) where she managed grants, residencies and artist programs and also launched SFFILM Invest, an ethical film financing initiative in partnership with Cinerich.

Prior to SFFILM, von Kuhn co-founded the Points North Institute with Ben Fowley and Sean Flynn, turning the four-day Camden International Film Festival into an internationally recognized documentary institute. He still serves as the Board Chair of the Points North Institute and is also a member of the Catapult Film Fund Board. He will now split his time between Athens and Los Angeles.

Oxbelly will soon announce the first of its new programs in 2023: two programs serving writers internationally, which will open for applications next week.
