Celian Murphy will play American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who has been dubbed the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in running the Los Alamos Laboratory and his involvement in the Manhattan Project. “Picky Blinders” star Christopher Nolan has confirmed his role in the upcoming historical epic “Oppenheimer”. The pair are longtime collaborators (Nolan has a stock company of players like Tom Hardy, Michael Kane and Christian Bell who have starred in multiple films). Nolan and Murphy have previously worked together on “Batman Begins,” “Inception” and “Dunkirk.”
Universal Pictures will make a 100 million film after winning the rights in a fierce bidding battle that also saw the likes of Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. . ‘The decision to release its entire 2021 slate together in theaters and on HBO Max for a discount on Covid. His most recent Warner Bros. film “Tenet” was not part of the HBO Max deal.
“Oppenheimer,” as in previous Nolan films, “Dunkirk” and “The Dark Knight”, will be shot with IMAX cameras. Universal Pictures will distribute “Oppenheimer” worldwide and release the film on July 21, 2023 in North American theaters.
The film is written by Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Rowen and Nolan of Atlas Entertainment. “Oppenheimer” is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and the Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Production will begin in early 2022. Although Oppenheimer played a key role in the development of nuclear weapons, he later developed complex feelings about their deadly power. He lobbied for international control of nuclear power and opposed the creation of more destructive hydrogen bombs.
Nolan will be reunited with former collaborators such as director of photography White Van Hoytema (“Tenet,” “Dunkirk,” “Interstellar”), editor Jennifer Lam (“Tenet”) and Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Garanson (“Tenet”).
