Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam played a surprise set at the Ohana Festival

3 min read

Eddie Vedder didn’t even plan to perform at his own Ohana festival on the beach at Dana Point in California on Friday night (September 2) – his solo set was scheduled for tomorrow, with the Pearl Jam event scheduled to close on Sunday.

But when headliner Kings of Leon cancels at the last minute to be with their ailing mother Betty Lou Murphy, who finally died on Friday morning, Pearl Jam frontman marshals his new solo band to fill the slot and also show off his first performance with him. By his 17-year-old daughter Olivia.

The 11-song set for family and friends came to the beach festival site on Thursday evening for a similar personal performance and introduced the world to a new Vedic backing band: former Red Hot Chili Papers guitarist Josh Klinghaffer (who is now a touring member of Pearl Jam). Revered session bassist Pino Palladino, Red Hot Chili Papers drummer Chad Smith, singer / songwriter Glenn Hansard and guitarist Andrew Watt, who are creating tracks for Veder’s upcoming solo album, “Earthling”.

“We’re making it here tonight,” Vedder said. Looking at Pearl Jam founding members Stone Gosard and Jeff Ament from Sidetage, the group has put its own hard rocking spin on the “porch”, gently relaxed on “Long Road” and released an unfamiliar, punk version similar to “Corduroy”. Version Veder benefited from a television vaccine this spring.

Vedder pays homage to the Drui Kings of the Lyon camp, including a cover of the band’s “Molly Chambers,” which the musicians learned just hours earlier (a cover of Vaseline’s “Molly’s Lips,” which was later popularized by Nirvana. Setlist but not played).

Another first, Olivia Vedder sang on stage when her father proudly watched during “My Dad’s Daughter”, which appeared on the soundtrack of the recently released Shawn Penn movie “Flag Day.” Hansard was the lead voice in “Tender Day”, another standout for “Flag Day”.

To close out the set, the team teased a part of Pearl Jam’s “Better Man” but instead split into a crushed version of Pretenders’ “Precious”. For hardcore Pearl Jam historians, this choice is true, as Wedder 1 tried to offer Chrissy Hind, the woman in front of the Pretenders, a “Better Man” to record for a charity album in 1993, but the session was not, and the song is one of Pearl Jam’s most enduring and acclaimed songs. Became one of.

Veder and company rehearse the first three days of the week on Saturday to prepare for their planned set, which sources say will have a separate set list than tonight’s instant performance.

The previous day, the Ohana site had been evacuated for more than an hour when a fast approaching thunderstorm soaked the area. Once the rain has stopped and the crowd has returned, Black Pumas restores vibrancy from their 2019 self-titled debut with lively performances of tracks like “Confidence” and “No You Better”.

My Morning Jacket was next, and to capitalize on the extended timeline to jam the gruesome songs like “Le Lo,” “Off the Record” and “Lost,” followed by “The Waterfall II” released in 2020. The group, which has often shared bills with Pearl Jam in the past, will release its ninth studio album, a self-titled theme, on October 22nd.

Ohana continues today with performances by Hansard, Maggie Rogers, Mac DeMarco and Spoon. Pearl Jam will be the title of both nights of an “Encore” weekend of the October 1-2 festival.
