Top Indian actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui (“Sacred Games”) is buzzing. He has just been nominated for Best Actor International Emmy for Sudhir Mishra’s Netflix movie “Sirius Men”.
Siddiqui’s next big international splash is Bangladeshi director Mostafa Sorayar Farooqi’s “No Lands Man”, in which he played the lead role. The film had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the prestigious Kim Ji-seok Award.
Farooqi’s “television” shut down Busan in 2012. The filmmaker was at the forefront of the new wave movement in Bangladesh with films like “Dub – No Bed of Roses” (2017) and “Saturday Afternoon” (2019). “No Lands Man” originated from the identity that Farooqi gave to Siddiqui in Calcutta six years ago.
Siddiqui plays a newcomer or a man known as Samir, who cannot tell the truth, including his name, nationality, religion, family and past, as he seeks refuge in a potentially devastating mystery. The film is set between the United States, India, Pakistan and Australia.
“Sometimes I feel like, ‘Which continent do I belong to?’ – And I’m full of loneliness. Farooqi had this idea and that’s what inspired me to work with him and obviously his body of work, “says Siddiqui. The film is produced in collaboration with Sun Music and Motion Pictures of Bangladesh (“Lalon”) and Bango BD, Bangladesh’s largest streamer. Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman is on the board as executive producer and composer.
India-based Magic If Films, directed by Siddiqui, his brother and his wife, is also on the board as a producer. The company had previously co-produced the acclaimed “Manto”, but for the first time “No Lands Man” the actor is personally taking credit for producing a feature film.
“I thought it was our film. This is my film as much as Farooqi or it’s Rahman, and it needs to be made. That was the thinking behind my project as a producer, ”said Siddiqui.
The cast of “No Man’s Land” also includes Australian actor Megan Mitchell, Bangladeshi musician and actor Tahsan Rahman Khan and India’s Isha Shah Chopra.
