Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman takes hiatus for mental health

Fall Out Boy lead guitarist Joe Trohman is stepping away from the band for the foreseeable future, the group announced Wednesday evening.

Fall Out Boy shared a statement attributed to Trohman on social media, in which the musician cited mental health issues as the overwhelming reason behind his decision to leave the band.

“Without revealing all the details, I must disclose that my mental health has deteriorated rapidly over the past few years,” Trohman’s statement read. “So, to avoid fading and never coming back, I’ll be taking a break from work which sadly includes stepping away from Fall Out Boy for a spell.”

Trohman’s note continued with an assurance that his departure from Fall Out Boy was not planned to be permanent, that he would return to the team when he was ready.

“Should I go back to the fold? Absolutely, one hundred percent,” the statement read. “In the meantime, I must recover which means putting myself and my mental health first. Thank you to everyone, including my bandmates and family, for understanding this difficult, but necessary decision.”

Trohman began bowing out of the Fall Out Boy event before the announcement. The guitarist was a no-show for the band’s performance at the Alter Ego Festival in Los Angeles earlier this month.

Trohman’s departure comes as Fall Out Boy prepares for the March 24 release of his new album, “So Much (For) Stardust,” fueled by Ramen & Elektra. It will mark the band’s first album release since 2018’s “Mania.”
