Fizz-e-Motion has acquired international sales rights to the upcoming skating thriller “Free Skater” and will present it to buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin next month. Indicans have rights to North America. The producer will handle Scandinavian distribution. The Fizz-e-Motion trailer has debuted (below).

Directed by Rupp Olenius, the film centers on a promising figure skater who flees Russia to Finland to escape his inhumane conditions. Despite a bright future and new possibilities, his past won’t let him go. He realizes that facing his troubled past is his only option to rise to the top.

The screenplay, written by Ville, is based on her own experiences as a gymnast, similar experiences of her peers, and harrowing stories of female athletes and dancers that surfaced after the #metoo movement began.

In a statement, Olenias said: “The film not only discusses the practice methods, mentality and human rights of athletes but also highlights the unfortunate connection between women’s sports and human trafficking, which we are increasingly aware of in the #metoo movement. Our goal was to make a European sports film. Doing that doesn’t just glamorize sports, but dares to dig deep as a real person in the sometimes over-demanding professional sport.”

The film stars Villo, Lena Uotila, Karolina Blackburn and Jevgeny Haukka, with figure skating stunts performed by Belgian Olympic skater Loena Hendricks.

The production company is Bright Fame Pictures. Co-produced by Brave Teddy, Optipari and Whitepoint. The film was produced by Olenias, Vilo, Tia Siltanen and Mikka J Antilla.
