Pack your zip lines and grapes, the sequel to “Girls Trip” is taking us to West Africa.

Writer-director-producer Tracy Oliver, who co-wrote the original 2017 romp, joins diversity Studio and presented by Audible at Sundance provided an update on the anticipated reunion of Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish.

Oliver, at the festival to promote the second season of his Amazon Prime Video series “Harlem,” said he has a “definite ‘Girls Trip 2’ update. That it is officially happening. I can say that.” He also gave a plot update, and while the film’s producer Will Packer “could kill me, we’re going to set it in Ghana.”

One of Oliver’s “Harlem” stars, actor Shonika Shandai, “Afrochella!” He shouted. After Oliver dropped the news. He referred to the annual Afrochela Festival, Ghana’s premier cultural and music event which takes its name from the American Full Crown Convention Coachella. Oliver confirmed that the ladies of “Girls Trip” will be looking to attend the festival, which has attracted prominent musicians from the region, including Beyonce collaborator Shatte Wall. A production timeline is unknown as Oliver has yet to submit his script.

The first “Girls Trip” was a significant box office hit, grossing $140 million worldwide on a $16 million budget. Malcolm D. Lee directs the project, produced by Packer and co-written by Olivier and Kenya Barris from a story they envisioned with Erica Rivinoza. It also launched the recently-controversial Haddish into superstardom.

Oliver was on a festival tear last year, premiering his acclaimed horror comedy “The Blackening” at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Tim Story, the movie was acquired by Lionsgate on the heels of TIFF and will release this coming June.

“Harlem,” starring Meagan Good, Grace Byers, Jerrie Johnson, and Shandai, will debut its second season in a weekly rollout on Prime Video starting February 3.
