Hugh Jackman Roasts Ryan Reynolds: Don’t Nominate ‘Spirited’ For Oscars

Ryan Reynolds earned a spot on the Oscar shortlist for Best Song for “Good Afternoon” from his Christmas movie “Spirited” with Will Ferrell. But Hugh Jackman, who is set to star opposite Reynolds in the upcoming “Deadpool” sequel, hopes the Academy will avoid further inflating Reynolds’ ego with the nomination.

“Ryan Reynolds getting nominated for Best Song is going to make the next year of my life unbearable,” Jackman joked in a video posted on Twitter. “I got to spend a year shooting Wolverine and Deadpool with him. Believe me, it will be impossible. That would be a problem.”

Jackman opens the video by praising Reynolds’ holiday movie, saying, “I loved ‘Spirited.’ It’s a great movie, the whole family watched it and had a blast. I love Will [Ferrell]I love Octavia [Spencer]… and ‘Good afternoon,’ I laughed all the way through. It’s absolutely brilliant.”

However, Jackman went on in a deadpan delivery, saying, “But please, from the bottom of my heart, don’t legalize Ryan Reynolds. [with an Oscar nomination]”

Jackman is currently wrapping up his run on Broadway in “The Music Man” before he begins shooting the third “Deadpool” movie. It was announced that he would return to the role of Wolverine in September. The film is slated for release in 2024.

Reynolds and Jackman have a long superhero history together. The “Deadpool” star first appeared as the character in 2009’s widely panned “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” the first “X-Men” spinoff to focus on Jackman’s character. But that version of Deadpool had his face sewn in and didn’t feature his iconic red-and-black costume. Several years later, Reynolds got another go-round as the wise-cracking assassin in a proper, R-rated “Deadpool” movie, which began a series of top-grossing “X-Men” films.
