Hugh Jackman’s ‘The Music Man’ for 2021 Broadway Redesign – Variety

3 min read

When Broadway closed its doors on March 12 due to a coronavirus epidemic, The Great White Way closed and redefined what would mark the longest shutdown in history and create a monumental economic impact.

An announcement from producers Scott Rudin, Barry Dealer and David Jeffen on Wednesday said Hugh Jackman’s return to Broadway in “The Music Man” has pre-scheduled April 20, 2021 and May 20, respectively. Rehearsals will begin on February 8, 2021.

Other shows like “Beatlesize”, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” and “Hangman” didn’t close their doors. Delays include Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, including “Birthday Candle”, “Caroline or Change”, “Flying Over Sunset,” “How I Learned to Drive,” “MJ” and “Plaza Suite.” These closures could cost as much as 500 million, analysts say.

For “The Music Man,” Jackman will still play the role of conference professor Harold Hill, who travels to River City and persuades local musicians to buy uniforms and equipment from him to start a band. River City librarian Marian Paro (Sutton Foster), who carried out his plan, became interested in Hill’s love and was forced to choose between love or money.

Previews for “The Music Man” were originally set for September 2020, with the opening on October 15 of this year.

“We are obviously disappointed that the music man did not start rehearsals as scheduled. But safety is protection and it is a priority for our visitors and for our organization – every consideration, ”Rudin said in a statement.

“Despite the suspension, we remain together as an organization, and we are grateful to be able to do that. And so we look forward to reaching the Winter Garden in early April – with a beautiful, heartfelt music man – in early April and being a part of what we expect we will once again be a vibrant and fascinating Broadway.

Jackman expressed his excitement for playing the role of Hill in The Great White Way, winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1959 to Robert Preston. “The Music Man” won four more tones, including Best Musical, and the original cast album peaked at number one on the Billboard charts and remained on the charts for 245 weeks. It also won its first Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album.

“Performing on Broadway is a great honor for an actor; In fact, one is the best. No two shows are exactly the same, largely because of the audience, ”Jackman said in a statement. “Show One is full of anticipation, fear and excitement. It’s like opening night 8 times a week; The power is evident in the theater. It’s the same feeling that every show has after that – and you and I are going through it together. Changes to the date will not accept any of this. All it can do is help the music man ensure that the audience and our organization are in a completely safe environment. Can’t wait for that day! “
