Hulu has introduced a new user interface on Apple TV, Roku – Variety2 min read
Hulu is introducing a new user interface – a part redesign has been sent, acknowledging it, as customers say it’s harder to see new content than accessing the streamer’s “continued” features
A key change to the new Hulu UI is that visitors can now navigate through the collection vertically and explore within a collection by moving horizontally. This is primarily on the example used by corporate siblings Disney Plus and every other streaming service used, including ESPN Plus.
Hulu said the new UI will be available to some customers on Roku and Apple TV devices starting Wednesday (May 20) and will be widely launched over the next two months as it plans to bring new interfaces to new platforms in the summer.
In another change, content categories like TV, movies and sports are running on the master navigation menu. According to Jason Wang, VP of product management and director of product management, customers can easily navigate Hulu’s content library with fewer clicks.
“We’ve heard feedback from our viewers and heard that they like how easy it is to show the shows and movies they like but discovering new content isn’t so easy,” executors wrote in a blog post about the new UI.
Part of the reason for the Hulu interface update was to provide a more consistent experience across a trio of Disney streaming products. Disney – which acquired full control of Halu in a deal with Comcast last year – offers Hulu a three-discount bundle with advertising, along with Disney Plus and ESPN Plus for 99 99.12.99 per month (26% off ১ 1.97 if purchased separately). Meanwhile, the newly designed Hulu UI will use the tile size of a TV show or movie as a visual indicator to drive viewers to the maximum additions. For example, according to Danny and Wang, new shows or movies will be bigger in size “we know you don’t want to miss”, while “keep an eye out” tiles may be smaller to give a more headline look at a glance.
Also, in addition to the new UI, Hulu says it will display curated collections (compiled by human editors) in a more personalized way based on customer viewing patterns. For example, any Hulu viewer who likes medical drama will see these titles in the first undergraduate drama collection; In that same compilation, a fan of romantic dramas would see them as a priority instead.
As of March 26, Disney had a total of 32.1 million subscribers (3.3 million in its live + SVOD levels), up 2% from year to year, according to Disney. However, Hulu’s SVOD subscriber average revenue fell 5% from the previous year to entry 12.06 per month after reducing the entry-level package to entry 5.99 per month.
