It’s bad behavior for a fan to throw their phone in a viral video

2 min read

Bad Bunny has responded to online backlash after footage of him throwing a fan’s phone over the holidays went viral. The reggaeton singer did not apologize for the confrontation, which he called a “lack of respect” on the part of the fan, and explained his response.

The video, which was filmed in the Dominican Republic, shows a crowd of fans surrounding Bunny as he walks down the street and one female fan, in particular, stepping in front of him with the front-facing camera on her phone open. The rabbit is seen grabbing the device and throwing it far as an off-camera viewer exclaims “Wow! Really?” As someone in Bunny’s entourage replies, “You have to respect his space.”

“Anyone who comes up to me to say hello, say something to me, or just meet me, will always have my attention and respect,” Bunny wrote in a tweet Monday night. But “to those who come to put a damn phone in my face, I will consider it for what it is: a lack of respect and I will treat it the same way.”

Fans and online comments seem divided, with equal amounts of defenders and critics. While some said he was right to set his boundaries, others said the artist of the year should have considered his position and used his words instead of his work.

Despite hinting at a hiatus, Bunny recently released a surprise single, “Gato de Noche,” and gave an impromptu concert on the roof of a gas station in Puerto Rico (he even had a guest performer, his frequent collaborator Archangel.)
