As “Avatar: The Way of Water” approaches the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office, James Cameron says it’s a reminder that moviegoers still value the theater experience in an era dominated by streaming. Talked to Cameron diversity during the official digital pre-show for the Golden Globes and reacted to the box office dominance of the “Avatar” sequel.

“The Way of Water” has grossed over $1.7 billion and is currently ranked as the seventh-highest-grossing film. With its international box office total of more than $1.19 billion, the film ranks as the fifth-biggest international release behind only “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Titanic” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” That means Cameron has three of the top five international releases in history.

“I’m not thinking of it in those terms,” Cameron told STAT. “I’m thinking we’re going back to theaters around the world. They are even going back to theaters in China where they are facing this big covid wave. We as a society are saying, ‘We need this! We have to go to the theatre.’ Enough with the streaming already! I’m tired of sitting on my ass.”

Later in the interview, Cameron addressed moviegoers who text during movies in theaters. “They’re missing the point,” the director said. “When we go to the movies we make a pact with ourselves to have a few hours of undivided attention. It’s about immersing yourself…choosing to commit to it ahead of time.

Cameron said in last week’s episode “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” That “Avatar: The Way of Water” will turn in the profits needed to get the rest of its franchise sequels.

“It looks like the momentum the film has now that we’ll easily get through our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t walk away from it and I’ll have to do these other sequels,” Cameron said. “I know what I’m going to do for the next six or seven years.”

“The point is we’re going to be OK,” Cameron added about turning a profit. I’m sure we’ll be discussing the game plan going forward for ‘Avatar 3’ soon with Disney’s top brass, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the entire film, so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. I am And then write both ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’. We even have some ‘4’ cans. We have started a franchise at this point. We started a story that could now span multiple films.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is now playing in theaters nationwide
