Jennifer Connelly stars in one of 2022’s biggest movies, “Top Gun: Maverick,” as badass bar owner Penelope Benjamin, who has a love affair with Tom Cruise’s Maverick. Cruise’s name has been kicked around as a potential dark horse Best Actor Oscar nominee, and Connelly said diversity The nod would be well-deserved due to the scope of his achievements on set.
“He’s awesome,” she said. “He does an amazing job in the film. He’s amazing as a person and great as an actor, and I think he’s perfect. He embodies that character so beautifully and I think he deserves it.”
“I think the film is a really well-made film and it’s really hard to make a film like that,” Connelly continued. “Also, thinking about Tom’s work, think about the things he did for that role. Besides all that stuff on the ground and how great he is in those scenes and building those relationships…I think his relationship with Miles’ character is so beautiful and moving. But the work he did to complete those flying sequences was something else.”
Connelly spoke about Cruise while discussing his new film “Bad Behavior.” diversity Studio presented by Audible at Sundance. He was joined by his co-stars Ben Whishaw and Alice Englert. Engelert wrote and directed the film, which is about a difficult mother-daughter relationship that is fundamentally changed by a retreat for spiritual enlightenment.
“In general, I really appreciated the tone of the writing,” Connelly said of why he signed on to the film. “In particular, one scene that really tickles me is the mother-child exercise scene. When I got there I was like, ‘This is so fun. It’s very funny to me.’ I was kind of hooked by then.”
