Jeremiah Green, co-founder and drummer of the rock band Modest Mouse, died Saturday night after a battle with cancer, the group announced. He was 45.

“I don’t know an easy way to put it: today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah,” the band wrote on its official Facebook page shortly before midnight. “He lay down to rest and just faded away. I want to say some nice words right now, but this is not the time. These will come later, and from many. Appreciate the love you have given, received, given and will receive. Above all, Jeremiah was about love. We love you.”

Modest Mouse announced Green’s stage four cancer diagnosis just a few days ago: “Jeremiah was diagnosed with cancer a while ago, and is currently undergoing treatment. It’s running smoothly and seems to be making a positive difference. Jeremiah, like me, I believe in the power of positive energy, so if you would be so kind as to send ‘good vibes’ (to quote Jeremiah) to Jeremiah and his family, that would be great.”

Green founded Modest Mouse in Washington in 1992 with Isaac Brock, singer and lead guitarist, and bassist Eric Judy, who left the group in 2012. The drummer briefly left Modest Mouse in 2003, but rejoined and continued recording and touring with the group. Outside of Modest Mouse since the year, he has previously played with Wells, Satisfact, Red Star Theory and the band Paved. He is considered an acclaimed drummer in indie rock music and was named No. 37 on the music publication Stylus magazine’s list of the Top 50 Greatest Rock Drummers.

Current members of Modest Mouse include Brock, Tom Peloso, Russell Higbee, Ben Massarella and Simon O’Connor. The band has released seven studio albums, beginning with 1996’s “This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About,” and hits such as “Float On,” “Ocean Breathes Salty,” “Dashboard” and “Lampshade on Fire.” . ” Their latest album, “The Golden Casket”, was released on June 25, 2021.
