Joe Walsh has some extra time on his hands as the Tour Gals have been off the tour for more than a year since their further tour was canceled, and he plans to use it through a weekly radio show on a radio station in Los Angeles.
He will take charge of the disc jockey every Saturday at 6 p.m. For KCSN, Cal State Northridge is an official radio outlet based on the region’s only “adult option” – a formatted station, with hour-long “Joe Walsh Old Fashion Rock N ‘Roll radio shows.
It’s not uncommon for classic rock stars to host their own radio programs now, but almost everyone has done it for satellite radio, which has made Walsh’s platform a fairly novel choice. KCSN – better known to many listeners by the number of 7.5 FM dials – comes closer to listening like commercial radio than most public radio stations, but it has more free-range playlists than its local rock counterparts.
“This public radio station serves the community I live in and is funded by listeners,” Walsh said in a statement. “I like that men in relationships don’t decide what I hear. My show will be a mix of music to my liking, music I think people will want to hear and there are a few song stories in it that I’m sure no one knows about. Hopefully, the show will build some more audience and support for the station and we will have a lot of fun in the process.
Patrick Osborne, general manager of KCSN, said Walsh reached out to them with the idea of taking a shift in the air. “Although we hate to see all events and festivities canceled this summer,” Osborne said, “we’re glad to have time to kill Joe in the air of 88.5.5.” They’re assuming he’s not handling Mike strictly as a solo artist. “As one of the many local fixers in the entertainment royalty and social / Hollywood community, we expect potential guests to be deeply moved by Joe Roldex, so we feel great to be able to present him with car keys.”
Osborne added that “flattering the rock legend and financially supporting the station’s flattering” membership director Laura Kelly said Walsh “was always on our side when it came to running the membership.” At the time of the April pledge, Walsh promised to meet the grant that day.
Walsh fans don’t have to check into the Hotel California to hear him. The station’s live programming is available in an 88.5 app and on the web at http://www.885FM.org.
