Oscar-nominated directors Florian Zeller (“The Father,” “The Son”) and Federica Saint-Rose have boarded Babak Jalali’s Sundance-bound “Fremont” under their new banner Blue Morning Pictures.
The movie will have its world premiere in the next section at Sundance, and will be repped by CAA in the US while Memento International is handling international sales.
Directed by Iranian-born, London-based director Jalali, the black-and-white film offers a warm portrait of a young Afghan woman haunted by her past, who decides to start a new life in California.
The film tells the story of Donya, a 20-something former translator for the US military in Afghanistan, who now works in a handmade Chinese fortune cookie factory in San Francisco. A new immigrant, he struggles to get his life back in order. In a moment of sudden revelation, he decided to send a special message to a cookie.
“Fremont” marks the screen debut of Anaita Wali Zada, a real-life Afghan refugee, who stars in the film opposite “The Bear” Golden Globe-winning actor Jeremy Allen White and Greg Tarkington (“Ant-Man”). .
“Babak Jalali’s ‘Fremont’ tells a deeply human story with such a unique blend of poetry and levity that it is sure to warm the hearts of viewers like us,” Zeller and Saint-Rose said.
“It’s a film about building bridges and love, which resonates deeply in the broken and isolated times we find ourselves in. We couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect film and team to collaborate with and we’re extremely proud to bring it to the screen,” the duo continued.
Jalali previously directed “Land” which played in Berlin, “Radio Dreams”, winner of the best film award in Rotterdam and “Frontier Blues” which competed in Locarno. “Fremont” was written by Carolina Cavalli, whose filmmaking credits include “Amanda” and Jalali.
Jalali said the film team is “thrilled to have Blue Morning Pictures, an exciting new company with which we all share a similar sensibility, join us on the ‘Fremont’ team!”
“I love Florian Zeller’s work and the support and encouragement I have received from both him and Federica Saint-Rose means a lot,” Jalali continued.
“Fremont” Produced by Marjaneh Moghimi’s Butimer Productions and Rachel Fung’s Extra A Productions in association with Blue Morning Pictures. The film was written by Carolina Cavalli (‘Amanda’) and Jalali, and produced by the late Marjaneh Moghimi, Sudnia Shroff, Rachel Fung, George Rush, Chris Martin and Laura Wagner.
