Lady Gaga Postgraduate Lecture – Class Encourages Variety 2020 Class

Lady Gaga painted a picture of racism in America as a deadly forest that must be uprooted in her postgraduate speech for the “Favorite Class of 2020” event on YouTube.

The Grammy-winning musician said he had to rewrite his speech after the death of George Floyd and the nationwide protests against systemic racism and police brutality that began last week.

“You see what a moment in the evolution of this country. You see society changing in a profoundly important way. This change will be slow and we need to be patient. But change will happen and it will get better, ”he began.

Gaga said her mind turned to nature when she thought about how widespread and oppressive racism was in the United States.

“I think of a vast forest full of tall trees. The tree is as old as this country. The trees that were planted with racist seeds. The trees that grew the branches of superstition and the leaves of oppression, and the mangled roots that buried themselves deep in the ground, created a web that developed so beautifully and became so entangled that we try to see clearly how it works. This forest is where we live. This is a moral and standard system that we as a society have maintained and encouraged for many centuries. I create this analogy between racism and nature in this country because it is as vast and real as nature. It’s a part of everything that touches the light, ”he said.

He explained how through this unprecedented period of history, high school graduates are the seeds that will become the force of change.

“All of us are being invited to challenge that system and think about how to influence real change. I believe in my heart that the people who are going to make this change are listening to me right now. I know this is true because it is the seed of the future that you are. You are the seed that will become a new and different forest that is far more beautiful and loving than the one we live in now,

Gaga sees three things that are needed to eradicate racism: time, effort, and divine grace.

“We can control time and adequate effort. We cannot control the divine grace, but I believe that the divine grace is the faith that we can choose to place in each other, to love and to improve effectively, ”he said.

Finally, he encouraged graduates to overcome difficult challenges and believe in themselves to listen to each other.

“If we don’t listen to it, we don’t learn,” he said.
