Matt Reeves confirmed in an interview with Collider that he has an upcoming meeting with new DC studio bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran on their overhauled DC Universe and his ongoing Batverse. The goal is to ensure that both universes don’t “collide with each other” in the storytelling. As Reeves says, “We want to support each other.”
Reeves’ Batverse began last year with his Robert Pattinson-starrer “The Batman,” which won critical acclaim and earned $770 million at the worldwide box office. The universe will continue on HBO Max with the Colin Farrell-starring Penguin series and the Pattinson-starring “The Batman” sequel. Other movies and series are expected.
Gunn and Safran’s new DC Universe is still being mapped out. The duo is coming up with a 10-year plan for a storytelling universe that will span film, television and video games. Gunn and Safran are expected to present their plans to Warner Bros. executives this month. The two have already confirmed that their plans do not include the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, as Gunn is writing a new Superman movie centered around a younger iteration of the character, nor will it feature the return of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. Other details about the new DC Universe are being kept under wraps.
“We know we’re not going to please every single person every step of the way,” Gunn wrote on Twitter about his DC Universe overhaul. “But we can promise that everything we do is in service of the story and in service of the DC characters we know you cherish and have cherished our entire lives.”
Speaking to Collider, Reeves said that Gunn and Safran have been “fantastic” in supporting his Batverse. “We’re actually supposed to meet in the next couple of weeks because they want to talk to me about the broader plan, and then they want to hear the Batverse plan,” the director added. “We’re getting together to talk about all these things.”
“Look, I’m excited to hear what they’re going to do,” Reeves continued. “The Batverse thing, as James said, and as Peter said, is its own thing that they’re letting us do.”
Reeves said he has a vision for how he wants the Batverse to play out, and “that’s part of what I’m going to talk to them about in a couple of weeks,” adding, “They’re going to talk to me about what they have in their 10-year plan. are doing or certainly are doing in the near future so that we understand that we’re not—this is air traffic control—we don’t want to crash into each other. We want to support each other. I’m super excited. Hearing what they’re doing and working with them. I’m really excited. It’s going to be cool.”
“The Batman” is now available to stream on HBO Max.
