Shandaland Audio, the podcast arm of the production company Shanda Rhymes, has announced the casting for its first scripted podcast “#Mater”, which is expected to be released in early 2022.
“#Mater” is written, produced and directed by Dylan Brown (Pictured above), Author and producer of “Power” prequel “Rising Canaan”.
The eight-episode scripted series is a preview of a case of police brutality. Gerald Hayes witnessed the brutal beating of her teenage son Niles by police officers, and a split-second decision prevented him from going to a friend’s restaurant with an officer. As the situation deteriorated and the media portrayed Niles as a criminal, Gerald used a tool to fight for justice for his son – social media. The story of “#Matter” is told through the lens of an investigative journalist, Kate Bell, who takes listeners through the interviews a year later on a lucky afternoon and beyond, finding surveillance footage and more.
Amin Joseph (“Snowfall”) as Gerald Hayes and Jennifer Christopher (“Dexter,” “Timeless”) as Kate Bell. Actors include Nile Bullock (as Niles), Steve Harris (as Gerald’s friend Jays), Puch Hall (Martin became a real estate developer as a sports agent) and Haley Joel Osment (as Sergeant Place, the police at the center of the incident).
“#Mater” originally started in the TV development department of Schundland before moving to Schundland Audio.
Among Brown’s other credits, he directed, wrote, and produced the feature film “Mac and Devin Go to High School,” starring Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa, released by Starz / Anchor Bay Films. Brown co-piloted a talk show / podcast titled “Show Out” with brothers Wood Harris (“The Wire”) and Steve Harris (“The Practice”).
