Heavy Metal magazine CEO Matthew Medney has resigned, Variety can exclusively confirm. He is set to succeed Myth founder Marshall Lees. Jamie Penrose will remain as Chief Operating Officer.

The company, after its self-titled 1981 adult animated sci-fi film, produced by Ivan Reitman and Leonard Mogel, has in recent years looked to return to film and television content and use its vast library of IP. Last year the company signed a landmark deal with Range Media Partners.

Read Medney’s full statement below:

Heavy metal has been at the core of my existence for 3 years, this is where I found a brand that I understood from the jump, something that I could help feed back into the conversation of storytelling brands. I’m grateful for the experience, time and trust in activating such an iconic and important brand from legacy status. That journey will stay with me forever.

But with that being said, it’s time for me to focus on creative endeavors like my intellectual properties, the narrative games I’m directing and projects I care about from a creative standpoint, and let Heavy Metal be led by someone who’s excited about business building. which is required to bring the next from this plateau. I will step into my role as a business partner and encourage and assist in important projects and relationships.

I am thrilled for this next chapter in my life where I will focus solely on creative endeavors and am confident that Heavy Metal operations are in good hands.

More to comeā€¦
