Mirzana Karanovich, an actor best known for her role in Amir Kusturika’s “When Dad Was Out of Business” and Jasmila Ž Bani’s Golden Bear winner “Grabavica”, is preparing to direct her second feature “Mother Mara”. It follows her directed debut, “A Good Wife”, which competed in Sundance’s World Cinema-Drama category in 2016 and has been screened at more than 40 festivals.
Producer Snejana van Hauvelingen introduced the new project at the Venice Gap-Financing Market last week. Koranovich will also star in “Mother Mar” alongside Vusik Perovich.
She said the success of “a good wife” was “very beneficial” for Karanovich. Meeting the audience boosts confidence in his management, allowing him to believe that he can manage again. This has made pitching and finding partners easier for “Mother Mar”, says Van Hauvellingen.
“Mother Mar” follows a successful businessman and single mother who suddenly loses her 18-year-old son Nemanja to a heart attack. Instead of breaking, he buried the wound deeply. But when Mar meets 25-year-old Gigolo Milan, the walls come down. He started a physical relationship with her, then a friendship developed.
“From the beginning I knew that the subject of my next film would be completely different [‘A Good Wife’]. But I had to deal with a woman my age, because it’s something I have a lot to say and feel, “said Karanovich.
The script was inspired by a play written by a young Bosnian playwright, Tanja Slizivar, who directed and starred Karanovich a few years ago. One of the four stories it depicts was an old woman and her young lover. Mar is a created character, but “she carries a lot [of things] As a person I can relate to and identify with him. I have borrowed part of my personality, my weaknesses, but also my strengths and ambitions, ”says Karanovich.
“When I was fifty years old [I discovered] My life was much richer and more productive when I was younger, ”she says.
In contemporary cinema, even in his own region there are still very few characters of older women. “The film will come as a big shock to viewers in the Balkans, as such stories still carry a huge ban and shame screen,” the director said, adding that the opportunity to remove the screen makes him even more excited to shoot and screen “Mother Mar”.
The project is scheduled to start shooting in March 2022.
According to Van Hauvellingen, the biggest challenge at the moment is to provide Karanovich with the most favorable conditions for shooting, including “the best shooting day and the best possible collaborator, so that he can excel in both lead actress and director.” -1 virus Unexpected development of the virus and with different rules in each country it may cost extra.
Karanovic will again collaborate with Bosnian photographer Errol Zubsevic (Dennis Tanovic’s “Life of an Iron Picker” episode), who worked on his debut. Makeup artist Tina Subic is Slovenian, from production designer Dragana Bakovich Montenegro. The main work of post-production will be done in Luxembourg and Slovenia.
The main producers produce this and that; Co-producers include Paul Thiltz Distribution, December, Deblokada and VHS. The film is a joint production between Serbia, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Montenegro and Bosnia.
