The colorful, talking M&Ms “spokescandies” — you’ve no doubt seen them in countless commercials — are taking an “indefinite hiatus,” the company announced Monday, after they received some weird pushback from Tucker Carlson that went viral on Twitter after the candy’s last makeover. Comedian Maya Rudolph will now be the face of M&Ms and will appear in a new commercial during this year’s Super Bowl.
“Over the past year, we’ve made some changes to our favorite spokespeople. We weren’t sure if anyone would notice. And we sure didn’t think it would break the internet. But now we get it — even a candy shoe can be polarizing. Which is the last thing M&M’s wanted since we’re all about bringing people together. Therefore, we have decided to take an indefinite hiatus from SpokeScandi,” M&MS wrote in a Twitter statement.
Last year, M&Ms unveiled new looks for some of their talking candies. Green M&M got sneakers instead of heels, and Brown M&M replaced her stilettos with block heels. The candy company also got rid of “Mr.” And “Ms” introduced a purple M&M to represent the title, “Acceptance and Inclusion”, and gave talking chocolates a “brief personality” for their characters.
The mascot makeover drew attention online, mostly made up of lighthearted memes, but some right-wing commentators ripped them, with Carlson calling them “wook” and “less sexy”.
“Wok M&Ms are back. Green M&M got her boots back, but apparently could be a lesbian now? And now there’s a plus-sized, fat purple M&M,” Carlson said in a segment that aired last year after the first M&Ms revamp. “Brown, to quote M&M, ‘transitioned from high stilettos to lower block heels.’ Also less sexy. That is progress. M&M’s won’t be satisfied until every last cartoon character is deeply unpleasant and completely androgynous, until you don’t want to have a drink with any of them. That’s the goal. When you are fully closed, we have acquired equity. They won.”

Rudolph will star in a new M&Ms commercial during the Feb. 12 Super Bowl, he told “The Today Show” on Monday.
“In her place, we are proud to introduce a spokeswoman that America can agree on: Dear Maya Rudolph. We are confident that Ms. Rudolph will champion the power of fun to create a world where everyone feels like they belong,” M&Ms wrote.
