What to see next? Netflix is now launching its “Play Something” instant-streaming shuffle feature on mobile – expanding the tool to unsustainable subscribers in the face of thousands of choices.
This April, Netflix launched Play Something on the connected TV platform worldwide. From Monday (Oct. October), Play Something will start rolling out on all Android mobile devices worldwide.
Netflix says play something is not entirely random: TV shows or movies are selected based on an individual user’s viewing history and preferences. On Android, the option appears in multiple places, including the startup profile screen; A row on the homepage; In the menu at the bottom of the screen; And as a floating button when viewing the title.
“Play Something helps Netflix members discover new shows and movies when they don’t want to make a decision,” said Patrick Fleming, director of product innovation at Netflix. “Today, we’re excited to bring this feature to Android as well – choosing what to look for on your phone has never been easier.”
Also on Monday, Netflix Fast Laughs is launching its curated short-form comedy clips on selected markets on Android. These include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, India, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Netflix’s goal, of course, is to increase customers’ overall time spent streaming video through a metric-new content-discovery tool related to account matching.
The company also seeks to encourage double-viewing with Download for You, an opt-in feature for Android that automatically downloads based on the taste of viewing recommended titles on your device (with iOS support later this month). Also, this summer Netflix Play has launched partial downloads, allowing members to start playback of a movie or episode on iOS and Android apps before the title download ends.
Netflix’s mobile apps show the top 10 shows and movies daily in the customer’s country. Netflix says, “This is a great, easy way to catch a ‘squid game'” – Streamer’s Breakout Korean Survival Drama Series – “After Coming Home From Your Travels”.
