Newen Connect Chief Sees Remake Rights, Theatrical Windows, Metaverse Innovation as Key to Success

Speaking at a day-long conference held as part of the UniFrance Rendez-Vous in Paris, Neuen Connect managing director Rodolphe Buet outlined his broad vision for the French film and TV banner, arguing that production outfits (like his own) needed to play. A greater role in direct B2C marketing, rather than leaving responsibility for such investment to the event broadcaster, speaks to the benefits of exclusive theatrical windows, even if overseas sales on non-linear platforms account for a significant percentage of a commercial studio’s revenue.

“The goal is to optimize viewership,” Buet said, as he explained that even a small theatrical berth can help fuel the buzz that leads to bigger losses later. β€œThe dream is to be a facilitator between work and the public. [To help] Creative content finds the right audience, sometimes the largest possible audience and sometimes a small one.”

When it comes to homegrown content creation, Newen execs subscribe to a Think Local, Act Global ethos, pointing to the “high intellectual potential” Newen delivers (pictured above) as an illustrative case study. Finding a perch in more than 100 foreign territories, the heartwarming police comedy scored hearty international sales, with equally enthusiastic being the upcoming US remake titled Buet, commissioned by ABC and shepherded by showrunner Drew Goddard.

“Ensuring that productions allow for remake rights, at their cost, is a major objective,” Buet explained. “Because it’s a way to showcase the talent of French creatives.”

Buet spoke glowingly of the potential of Metaverse, particularly as a way to help embellish and enhance project pitches. “[Metaverse pitches] Allow for a degree of creativity and connection with our partners that is much more engaging and engaging, while providing a better understanding of the Creator’s own vision,” he explained.

As an example, Buet cites the upcoming Andy Serkis-directed “Madame” β€” a period epic that reimagines wax sculptor Madame Tussauds in an anarchic, action setting β€” which is in development with Niuean Serkis’ Imaginarium Productions. “They created their own universe,” Buet said of Serkis and his team. “And from the moment of the pitch, they can immerse potential broadcasters in it.”

Buet also cited a pitch forum organized in conjunction with Series Mania, where participants had to pitch their eco-futuristic projects within the metaverse, and an outreach campaign targeting “Fortnite” players as two other examples of new media opportunities. “All these innovations and initiatives allow us to develop our knowledge, support our talent and producers, and reach new audiences,” Buet said. “And these ultra-creative universes can aid our thinking and methods in promoting cinematographic and audiovisual projects.”
