Considering the many recently released productions of Big Apple, including “Dash and Lily,” “Undoing,” and “The Rocks,” Hollywood’s mind seems to be in New York State lately. Second, Sophia Coppola’s latest streaming venture with Apple TV + and A24 follows Laura (Rashida Jones), who has accused her husband of cheating, hiring her feminist father Felix (Bill Murray) to help navigate the situation. The search took the duo to Bellmans Bar, a higher NYC water hole, located in the lobby of the two-story The Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side.
I was introduced to it in 2008 when I appeared on “Sex and the City: The Movie” and I recognized the bar that had the vision. It has been a love affair ever since! New York is probably full of landmark lounges, but perhaps no one is more acclaimed than Belmans. Although the legendary clientele, strong drinks and intimate ambience all add to her instincts, the original drawing is a gold-wrapped piece of wall-lined ural flavored bar named, created by Ludwig Bellmans, author of the favorite “Madeleine” children’s book series.
The four-season commission on fictional animal vignettes in Central Park ended in 1944, the same year the bar was opened to the public. In exchange for money, Belmelmans and his family were offered a free 1.5-year stay at The Carlyle in exchange for work. Appropriately titled “Central Park”, the painting is incredibly, currently the only exhibition of Bellmans art in the public exhibition.
To maintain the iconic piece, Carlyle recruits Seven full-time painters. Their preferred defense weapon? Wonder bread! According to Edible ManhattanDuring a massive recovery in 2002, it was discovered that the best way to remove nicotine stains with a valuable painting cake was to gently apply a classic white bread soaked in water.
