The 93rd Oscar is not until February, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is considering postponing the big night, according to multiple sources.
Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the specific plan at the moment was not very concrete. The television is currently set for February 22, 2021 on ABC.
A source familiar with the matter was told, “They will probably be suspended.” Different.
However, the man warned that the details, including possible new dates, have not yet been fully discussed or formally proposed. Another source says the date is currently unchanged on ABC.
When changes to the new temporary rules for Oscar eligibility were announced in April due to Covid-19, academy president David Rubin said Diversity It soon became clear how the 2022 Oscar campaign could change due to the epidemic.
“It’s impossible to know what the landscape will be like,” he said. “We know we want to celebrate the film but we don’t know exactly what it will look like.”
Under the general rules, a film must have a seven-day drama release in Los Angeles County to qualify for the Oscars. For this year, however, digitally released films may qualify if the studio originally planned a theatrical release. “I think everyone is sympathetic to the plight of the filmmakers and we are here to support our members and the film community,” Rubin said. “We don’t really know what will come in terms of the availability of dramatic exhibitions when it is understood. … Great movie work can be seen and celebrated only for this year and theaters are not open at this time.
The changes to the new rules include allowing Oscar-qualified dramatic runs in New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta and the Bay Area instead of just Los Angeles.
The academy declined to comment for this story.
The Oscar postponement also means it is unclear whether the academy will allow films released after the end of the year to qualify for the 2021 Oscars.
