Remembered by Jerry Garcia Graham Nash

3 min read

Graham Nash says he never got to know Jerry Garcia so well, their first meeting is part of Rock History: it happened in the fall of 1969, when Crosby, Steels, Nash and Young were recording their classic “Daju V” album, probably Nash’s. Includes the most well-known song, “Teach Your Kids.” At that first meeting, Garcia added an iconic, bluegrass-scented pedal steel guitar unit – incredibly, he had been playing the instrument for only a few weeks – without which it was virtually impossible to imagine the song. Here, as part DiversityGarcia’s memory on the 25th anniversary of his death, Jem Aswad has been told, is his first and last interview with Nash Garcia.

CSN and Y were doing “Daju Vu” at Wally Haider’s studio in San Francisco. The four of us were getting off at a very fun motel, the Caravan Lodge Motel, which was just a two-minute walk to the studio. Neil [Young] He had two bushy children in his house, Harriet and Speedy. [Laughs.] It was an insane time.

We did this track “to teach your kids” and Stephen thought because he and Neil played our constant guitar that we should be something different. David [Crosby] Said, “You know, Garcia is in the next studio and he’s been playing the steel guitar for months, ask me.” “Of course!” The dead were recording at the side door… “American Beauty,” weren’t they? David asked him and he liked the idea; He has never played Paddle Steel on record before. So he set his pedal still and we let him play the track and with most of the musicians as I did, I said, “I don’t want to tell you what to do. Feel it and play it.” So he played first. [take] And I said “Fantastic! It was just stunning. I was shocked that someone who has only been playing Paddle Steel for less than half a year could play so beautifully,” because it was so spontaneously heartwarming and thoughtful.

He said, “I’ve tidied up a little bit in a few places. Can I take it a second time?” “Go straight ahead” – I will never stop trying to improve it. So he played it and we ended up and I said “Yeah, it’s perfect, but it doesn’t work. To feel Like the first track you play, you have no idea what you’re going to do! “So he laughed and said okay. I knew that ‘teach your kids’ was likely to be a hit, but when Jerry put his pedal steel there I was sure it would be a hit.”[[[[The song peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970, but its impact has reached off the charts..]

I never paid him for the “Teach Your Kids” part, but I gave him a wine fender strut, which he immediately stuck to the decision of an anus and it became his “alligator guitar” for many years. I believe, when I bought the67, I was on tour with Hollis. We stopped at a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona and it was cheap and I bought it – and it barely sold for 0 470,000! [Laughs.]

So that was my first meeting with Jerry. We did not become real close friends; He was originally friends with Crossby, because Crossby lived in the Mill Valley, and we were traveling around the world at the time. But he was always incredibly beautiful and humble and he was certainly very wise.

The last time I saw him I was really very sorry. It was in Buffalo, New York [in 1990] When CSN is open to grateful dead. I was standing on this little carpet when we were setting up our instrument for our set and it was no number! This was Jerry’s place! It was a carpet on stage; I mean, what is F? It’s a bit sad that the grateful dead left the all-sensitive, all-important kind of band “Don’t step on Jerry’s anger” “It was a completely different scene:” Stay away from the grateful dead everyone, don’t talk to him. ” It was weird, because they were our friends, weren’t they? And with all due respect, we had ours!

So I didn’t get to know him so well, but I’ll tell you, the world isn’t such a good place without Jerry to be with him for so many years.
