Universal has released the first trailer for “Renfield,” a Dracula movie starring Nicolas Cage.
Despite movie (and vampire) fans’ curiosity about Cage’s unique spin on Count Dracula’s voice and aesthetic in the upcoming film, the Academy Award-winning actor is not in the lead role. Instead, the film’s protagonist and namesake Nicholas Hoult plays Renfield, the Transylvanian count’s right-hand man.
Renfield begins as a devoted servant who gradually becomes disillusioned with performing Dracula’s brutal tasks. When a traffic cop played by Awkwafina catches his eye, love fuels Renfield’s desire to reevaluate his outlook on life and continue helping Dracula.
The cast includes Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohre Aghdashloo, Bess Rouse and more.
In Stoker’s writing, Renfield was portrayed as a delusional inmate in an insane asylum who eats living animals because he believes their blood will make him immortal. Stoker eventually reveals, however, that these outlandish acts are the result of brainwashing by Dracula.
“Renfield” is directed by Chris McKay, who previously helmed “The Lego Batman Movie” and its sequel, and Samantha Nissenboim is producing the feature with Todd Lewis. The script is based on an idea by “The Walking Dead” comic book co-creator Robert Kirkman and written by “Rick and Morty” writer Ryan Ridley.
“What makes it super fun is that it’s a comedy,” Cage said diversity In a December 2021 interview. “And when you get that tone right — comedy and horror — like ‘An American Werewolf in London,’ it’s a blast.”
Holt will also appear in Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” a reboot of the 1929 film unofficially adapted from Stoker’s 1897 novel.
