Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathan’: Indian certification board suggests changes

2 min read

India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has “suggested changes” to superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback film Yash Raj Films’ Pathan, which also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.

Controversy erupted in India on December 12 when the song “Besharam Rang” – literally shameless color – was released. One part of the song features Padukone in an orange swimsuit and Khan in a green shirt. Some see orange as saffron – the color associated with India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party, the BJP. Green is a color traditionally associated with Islam. India has a long history of communal conflict between the two religions.

On 14 December, Narottam Mishra, home minister of the BJP-ruled central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, told the media that the costumes in the song were “offensive” and that it was shot with “a dirty mentality”, and warned. So that the film may be banned in the state. There were protests against the song in other parts of the state and effigies of Khan and Padukone were burnt by Hindu organizations in other parts of the country.

Another song from the film, “Jhume Jo Pathan” was released on 22 December and did not create any controversy.

Yash Raj Films has submitted “Paathan” for certification to the CBFC for a January 25, 2023 release. CBFC Chairman Prasoon Joshi issued a statement on Friday.

“‘Pathan’ has gone through a proper and thorough vetting process as per CBFC guidelines. The committee has directed the makers to implement suggested changes in the film, including songs, and submit the revised version before its theatrical release,” Joshi said.

“CBFC is always committed to finding the right balance between creative expression and audience sensitivities and believes that we can always find solutions through meaningful discussions among all stakeholders,” added Joshi. “While the process is being duly followed and implemented, I must reiterate that our culture and beliefs are solemn, complex and nuanced. And we need to be careful that it is not defined by trivialities that take the focus away from reality and truth. And as I have said before, the most important thing is to maintain the trust between the makers and the audience and the makers should work for it.”

In response, Mishra praised the CBFC’s decision and also said that filmmakers and actors should remember that “reel life affects real life.”

diversity Yash Raj Films has been reached for comment.

Khan is known as one of the best romantic stars of Bollywood. However, his last few films underperformed at the box office and his most recent release as a solo hero was “Zero” in 2018. He has since done cameos in “Lal Singh Chadda” and “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva”.

Directed by Siddharth Anand, “Pathan” is part of producer Aditya Chopra’s Spy Universe, which includes the Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer “Tiger” franchise and Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff starrer “War”.

Meanwhile, “Besharam Rong” has generated more than 144 million views on YouTube.
