Sundance deal: A24 in final talks to acquire horror film ‘Talk to Me’

A24 is in final negotiations to acquire the North American rights to “Talk to Me,” following the feature’s debut at the Sundance Film Festival. diversity Learned. According to sources, the film fetched a figure in the high seven-figure range.

The Australian horror feature enjoyed a packed premiere in the festival’s genre-slanted Midnight Selection lineup, garnering strong reviews thanks to its gripping performances and grimy bravado. The distributor has set plans to give “Talk to Me” a wide theatrical release during the summer movie season. WME and Bank-Side Films brokered the deal.

Starring Sophia Wilde, Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Zanzi, and Joe Terracs, the film follows a group of teenage friends who communicate with spirits as a party activity. Mia (Wilde) looks to connect with the supernatural after her mother’s death, but a séance gone wrong has dire consequences for the group.

Director duo (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Filippo directed and wrote the film. The duo has gained notoriety among horror fans for the violent and witty comedies of their YouTube channel RackaRacka. Samantha Jennings and Christina Seaton produce, while Christopher Sito serves as co-producer.

The deal comes hours after A24 emerged as the winner on Oscar nominations morning. The independent studio scored a total of 18 nods across all categories, marking a record for the highest total among all studios in the banner’s 10-year history. A24’s multiverse dramedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” received 11 nominations, the highest total for a film this year, while Brendan Fraser-starrer “The Whale” received four nods. “Aftersun,” “Causeway,” “Close” and “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” also earned nominations from the Academy.
