In a coming-of-age story, two unlikely teenagers encourage each other to follow their different passions.

It’s a pretty standard description of many movies and shows, but it’s offering a twist on the genre, revealed by its unusual title — “Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I’m Feeling a Little Left.” The off-beat movie will make its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Friday, January 20 at 5 p.m. PST, and online on Tuesday, January 24 at 7 a.m. to Sunday, January 29 at 10:55 p.m. in person.

Torn by her parents’ decision to leave town and move to the middle of nowhere, Etsy Levan (Emma Tremblay) believes her life is over until she meets her space-obsessed neighbor Calvin Kipler (Jacob Buster). Calvin has spent most of his life awaiting the next arrival of Jasper’s comet—partly due to his obsession with astronomy, but mostly because Calvin claims it was the last time it came… aliens kidnapped his parents. This year he’s gearing up for its comeback, so he can finally get them back. Etsy sees this as an opportunity to help him get into a NYC journalism program and decides to help him with his plans. Two newfound friends, and unlikely astronomical investigators discover more than what lies on the other side of the comet’s tail.

Written and directed by Jake Van Wagner, “Aliens Adopted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out” is Wagner’s Sundance debut, following directing credits on “Christmas Time” and “Studio C.” The film stars Will Forte (“Saturday Night Live,” “The Last Man on Earth”) as Calvin’s father Cyrus and Elizabeth Mitchell (“Lost,” “Revolution”) as Calvin’s mother Vera.

“Aliens Adopted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out” is produced by Jack Van Wagner, Micah Merrill, McLain Nelson, Austin Everett, Jeremy Prusso and executive produced by Adam Andreeg, Russ Kendall and Tom Krebs.
