“The Cell” director Tarsem Singh is returning to feature films with his first Indian project “Dear Jaasi”.

The film has completed a 50-day schedule in Punjab, North India and is heading to Canada for a two-week shoot. Post-production will take place in Montreal.

Plot details are being kept under wraps given that it is based on a true story. Cast details have also not been released at this time.

“This is my passion project and I believe it is the right time for the world to see it,” Singh said. “Such a powerful story needs to be told.”

Singh made his feature directorial debut with the Oscar-nominated film “The Cell” (2000) starring Jennifer Lopez. He directed the Berlin winner “The Fall” (2006) starring Lee Pace; “Immortals” (2011) starring Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and John Hurt; the Oscar-nominated “Mirror Mirror” (2012) with Julia Roberts and Lily Collins; and “Self/Less” (2015) starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley.

The filmmaker, who also directed the NBC series “Emerald City,” is known for his commercials and music videos for Lady Gaga, Deep Forest and R.E.M.

“Dear Jasie” was shot by Brendan Galvin (“Plane”). It is Bhushan Kumar for major Indian studios T-Series, Vipul D for Wakao Films. Produced by Shah, Ashwin Varde and Rajesh Bahl, Sanjay Grover and Singh for Creative Strokes Group.

Kumar said: “This is our first foray into mainstream international cinema and we are thrilled with the experience.”

Talking about watching Shah Singh “weave his magic on the sets”, Verde described the project as “an extraordinary thing helmed by an extraordinary director” and Bahl praised the director’s “spectacular” vision.

Grover, who was previously with MGM, added: “It’s really exciting to be making my first film with a director like Tarsem who I love and partnering with visionary producers like T-Series and Wakao Films.”

“Dear Jassi” will release worldwide in mid-2023.
