As a result of its unprecedented global pandemic and the recent assassinations of George Floyd, Brecona Taylor and Rear Brooks, the 2020 BET Awards took on even greater significance this year. Appropriately, the black entertainment celebration not only premiered the first national broadcast on CBS, it also celebrated its 20th anniversary.
“This is the perfect storm,” said Connie Orlando, executive vice president of programming who is the head of the network. “The BET Awards have always been a platform for creativity, culture and excellence. It’s always talked about what’s going on in the world and in our community … that’s what makes this award so special. “
The importance of celebrating the milestone is not less with the fact that it actually happened during the time of COVID, but it is happening at a great moment in black history. As the world stands in support of the Black Live Matter movement as a result of the killing of black Americans by law enforcement, businesses in Hollywood and across the country are increasingly recognizing the need for diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
In fact, BET Awards producers say there is no better time to honor black creatives than this moment.
The pre-recorded show “Unsafe” actress Amanda Siles is known for leading her actress and voice in front of Hollywood by “You can expect Amanda to be a classic Amanda,” Orlando says. “There was no better choice for this year’s show.” “
Nomination hopefuls and actors were in attendance, including Lizo, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Drake, Dababi, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Chloe X Haley and Travis Scott. Drake led the nominees with six nodes, while Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Rich got five points each. Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Lizo and Dabi were nominated for four and the third highest.
St. JNH, a writer and artist whose song “Rose” went viral last year thanks in large part to TickTock’s popularity, one of the most prestigious awards of the night for changing his guest, singer Wizkid on the “Brown Brand Skin Girl” in Beyonc and The show also has Blue Ivy Carter, the youngest nominee.
“It couldn’t be more perfect [or] “Even more disgusting,” says St. JHN (whose real name is Carlos St. John). “I nailed it to my head. Think about the importance of being nominated for a BET Rate Award for “Brown Skin Girl” with Beyonc ”.”
While it’s not clear if Beyonc হবে will be present, as she is being honored at this year’s Humanitarian Awards and Neil Ivy has received her first nomination, fans are hoping she will send a personal message.
The programming of the year marked another big moment of the show as it will be broadcast on CBS, a major broadcasting network for the first time, which will expand its core audience. “It’s going to be strong,” Orlando says. “It will be strong for everyone.”
Check out the full list and tune of the nominated candidates tonight at 8pm EST on CBS and BET to see who goes home with the trophy.
