In the latest episode of Disney’s “For Scores” podcast, EGOT-certified composer Alan Menken looks back at his history with the studio, for which he composed songs and scores for “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.” He further revealed that at least four new songs will be composed and written for the live-action version of “The Little Mermaid”.
Menken says: “At first, Lynn-Manuel was struggling to do Miranda Alan Menken-Style songs, and it seemed to him, walking with Howard Sky’s shoes was a terrific possibility. Then we wrote some songs that were in Lynn’s wheelhouse and for me, walking in Lynn-Manuel Mirander’s shoes was a terrible prospect, but we had an explosion.
Special in two parts, Menken spoke to the host এবং and Diversity Contributor জন John Burlingam off-the-shelf composer and lyricist Howard Ashman about meeting the off-Broadway hit (“Little Shop of Horrors”). “We always had a very strong feeling about making sure the story was moving forward and was always stylistically rooted in a world,” Menken said. “Howard will really educate the animators, and sit down and talk with them about how songs can run the story.”
Menken also shared a story with Ashman about collaborating together on “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin”, the unknown Ashman was fighting AIDS. A musician and friend, Ashman completed the work of music and lyricist, but died shortly before winning the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Beauty and the Beast” “Be Our Guest”.
In the second part, Menken discusses finishing work on “Aladdin” with British lyricist Tim Rice. The segment also discusses the amazing performance of musicals that were commercially or critically disappointing, especially “News” and “Hunchback of Notre Dame”, which went on to enjoy new life in the stage version.
Menken also shared a personal story about the young Lynn-Manuel Miranda in the podcast. “I heard about Lynn-Manuel Miranda when she was younger because my niece went to Hunter School and she was Lynn’s classmate,” Menken shared. “I need to hear about it [him] From my sister Faye, who would say, ‘This boy Lynn, she loves the‘ Little Mermaid ’very much. Can you sign this poster? I remember Lynn signing a poster that said, ‘To Lynn, please stop kissing Jenny’s feet. Alan Menken. ”
