Netflix’s “The Decameron” has begun shooting at Cinecitta Studios in Rome, where the period soap will be set for the next six months.

The US show, which is being produced entirely in Italy, marks one of the biggest international productions the storied studio has wooed in recent years.

From executive producers Jenji Cohan (“Weeds,” “Orange Is the New Black”) and creator/showrunner Kathleen Jordan (“Teenage Bounty Hunters”), the eight-episode drama takes place in 1348, as the Black Death epidemic hits hard. in the city of Florence. A handful of nobles are invited to retreat with their servants to a grand villa in the Italian countryside and escape the plague with a lavish vacation. But as social norms wear thin, what begins as a booze-soaked sex romp in the hills of Tuscany descends into an all-out scramble for survival.

Michael Appendahl (“Mad Men”) is directing four of the eight episodes, as previously announced.

“The Decameron” production now occupies a large part of the Cinecittà backlot, with the main interior of the large Villa Santa constructed in the sprawling Studio 5, known as the late filmmaker Federico Fellini’s second home. Other parts of the villa are built on Studio 4 and Studio 11 sound stages.

The announced cast of “The Decameron” is composed almost entirely of young non-Italian actors, including Josiah Mamet (“Girls”) as Pampinia, Villar’s soon-to-be wife; Tanya Reynolds (“Sex Education”) as Lysiska, an obedient yet unpredictable servant; and Karan Gill (“I May Destroy You”) as Panfilo, son of a politically prominent Florentine family.

But the show’s crew is mostly Italian, such as its production designer Luca Tranchino (“Domina,” “Prison Break”) and costume designers: Oscar winners Gabriela Pescucci (“The Age of Innocence”) and Uliva Pizzetti (“The Borgias”), who often work together.

The “Decameron” line producer is Nicola Rosada (“Spider-Man: Far From Home”), who works for Fremantle, which last year signed a five-year deal involving the continuous rental of six Cinecitta sound stages. The show is tapping into Italy’s tax rebates, which provide up to 40% of eligible production costs.

Cohan is executive producing for Netflix through his Tilted Production shingle. Kathleen Jordan is the show’s creator, showrunner and executive producer. Tilted Productions’ Blake McCormick and Tara Herman are also on board as executive producers.

Cinecittà, which is undergoing a radical renovation, will soon host another major US production As announced, Peacock’s Roland Emmerich’s Gladiator series “Those About to Die,” starring Anthony Hopkins as the Emperor Vespasian, will soon begin production at the Rome studio, starting in 2023.
