Revelation Films has acquired worldwide rights to “I Am Norwell Roberts,” the autobiography of the UK’s first black police officer. Norwell Roberts.
UK-based Revelations is initially developing a documentary feature with plans to expand on the script, which is told against the backdrop of social and political events from each decade of his life and career. These events will be presented through a mix of archive news, photography and music that define the era with the goal of allowing viewers to better understand Norwell’s struggles and successes in a world that was often against him. The film will be set against other important events in the UK black community that coincide with the trajectory of his life.
“I Am Norwell Roberts,” published by John Murray Press in June 2022 reached the top 10 in the Amazon charts and tells the story of the Metropolitan Police’s first black officer, joining the force in 1967. Norwell found out that he had a new job in the same way as the rest of the country – one from the Daily Telegraph Read that title ‘Met the first colored policeman.’
From that day on Roberts became the face – of acceptance, of a diverse police force, of a changing Britain. Although he became the poster boy for progressive policing, his day-to-day reality was anything but. His career culminated in the award of the Queen’s Police Medal for his service in 1996, a year before his retirement. In 2016, he received the Legend Recognition Award at the CA Awards in honor of his dedication to the safety of the black community and his determination to pave the way for the next generation.
Tony Carne, founder of Revelation Films, said: “The company behind the now iconic film was formed with the Terence Higgins Trust. [Higgins was one of the first people in the U.K. to die of an AIDS-related illness], 30 years on it seems fitting to make another film about a British icon. This is one of the most inspiring stories we have had the honor of developing Norwell spent his entire life ahead of the curve and his sheer persistence did not help to see significant changes in British society.”
“His focus and determination is simply to be the best copper [policeman] He could be, in the most difficult of circumstances, a crushing plow for the Met to become the much more ethnically diverse organization it is today. At a time when we need a new, more empathetic tone for conversation, disagreement and finding common ground, Norwell exemplifies this spirit,” added Carney.
Coming to Revelations is a third season of true-crime hit “The Real Manhunter” for Sky Crime, and an exclusive three-year development deal with former Detective Chief Inspector Colin Sutton to produce two investigative true-crime docuseries – “Belfield” and “West End Girls”. : The Search for a Serial Killer.”
