When will the three of us meet again? After taking a year off from indoor screening due to Covid-19, the New York Film Festival returns to Alice Tally Hall on Friday night with the world premiere of “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”
Denzel Washington and Francis McDermott, who starred Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in the adaptation of the favorite Shakespeare play, received an overwhelming standing ovation after the first (two) screenings of the film at dusk.
A24 and Apple will release a black-and-white movie, which is in contention for next year’s Oscars.
Screening adheres to strict Covid protocol, as guests were twice asked to wear a mask before playing a movie – covering both their nose and mouth. But there was a crowd at a bar inside the theater, as people shouted for a free cocktail with camper (festival sponsor) and soda.
“I just want to say that this is a tragedy, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time,” Cohen said when he began his first management journey without his brother Ethan.
McDermott played Lady Macbeth at the age of 14, and again a few years ago at the Berkeley Repertory Theater. She asked her husband, Joel Cohen, if she would consider directing “Macbeth” on stage, but she said she would like to do it as a film.
A question after the screening and when asked why he agreed to play Macbeth, Washington replied: “Because Joel Cohen asked me.”
In a review of Variety, lead film critic Owen Gliberman praised Quinn’s writing of Shakespeare’s famous plays, “[Coen] Has created a “Macbeth” that will captivate listeners-for all the darkness of its import, light cheerful, fleeting, and intoxicating. It shows you, through the ironic sympathy called for by Washington’s performance, how quickly the human race can move. And that brings that drama into deep focus. ”
“Macbeth’s Tragedy” was shot in the early days of the epidemic, and Covid had to stop production for five months on March 1, 2020.
“Before we got back together, I said,‘ Joel, we all need to get back to Zoom, ’McDermott said. “I need to know how everyone has been since the revolution.”
And although he’s anti-zoom, Cohen did a cameo to talk to his actors.
The after party of the film is being held at Tavern the Green.
