Among the performers scheduled for the eight-hour relief event “Introduction: Project Blue Marble” in honor of the Asian Pacific American month in May are J. Park, Miao, Raja Kumari, Milk, Lyrics Burn, and Una. To mark the occasion, hip-hop group Far East Movement is debuting a new song, “We Are True,” which can be heard in the show’s trailer (see video above).
Online concerts and fundraisers will stream live on Amazon Music’s Twitch channel starting Saturday, May 30, at 2 p.m. The hashtag #OURIDENTITY will be promoted across the livestream.
This year’s event focus was partly inspired by the success of the March 26 Twitch Stream Aid and the challenges the API community faced in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic, said Kevin Nishimura, co-chief executive of Transparent Arts and its members.
“We saw a lot of xenophobia and racism and branding in our community as a virus,” Nishimura said. “Our community thinks it can really use something that can inspire, something that can show a different side of our community.”
James of the Far East Movement / Transparent added “Prohgres” Roh, “but at the same time it is a celebration of what Asian Americans as a whole have achieved over the years.” “From ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ to Ali Wang to Alan Young, this representation we have not had in the history of our country.”
Each hour will feature guest hosts with whom visitors can interact via chat. They include former presidential candidates Andrew Young, Kelly Hu, Song Kong, Ronnie Chiang, Jeremy Lin, poet Rupi Kaur and fashion designer Prabal Gurung.
This is the fifth year of the “identity” of the Asian Pacific islands celebrating the American month. Previous events have featured Aukwafina, Mike Shinoda and Jhine Iko.
The event is co-hosted by Transparent Arts, Gold House, Amazon Music, Pacific Bridge Arts Foundation and XRM Media.
