‘Top Gun: Maverick’ became the number one movie at Paramount+ opening weekend

Paramount+ announced that “Top Gun: Maverick” became the most-watched movie worldwide in its opening weekend.

From December 22 to 25, “Top Gun: Maverick” also broke records domestically, becoming the most-watched movie premiere for the streaming service and surpassing previous record holder “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” by 60%. The Tom Cruise-led sequel also increased the viewership of the 1986 original by nearly 400% and the “Mission Impossible” franchise titles on Paramount+ by more than 140%.

While “Maverick” hasn’t faced much competition, Paramount+ has recently added several movies to its streaming library, including the horror hit “Smile” and the Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum-starrer rom-com “The Lost City.”

“The film’s success across theatrical, digital and now streaming is an undeniable proof point that demonstrates the strength of Paramount’s multi-platform release strategy,” said Brian Robbins, president and CEO and chief content officer, movies and kids, Paramount Pictures. and Family, Paramount+. “Across all of our 2022 titles, and now with ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ our studio has unlocked the value of the variable window that streaming enhances a film’s overall success.”

In addition to marking Cruise’s biggest opening and highest-grossing film, the film is Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing domestic release of all time and the number one movie at the box office over both Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

“Top Gun: Maverick” received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song and Best Motion Picture, Drama. The film was honored as one of the 10 Best Films of 2022 by AFI and nominated as Best Film by the National Board of Reviews. It also received Critics’ Choice Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor.

Joseph Kosinski directed the film from a screenplay written by Ehren Krueger, Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie. In addition to Cruise, the film stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer. “Top Gun: Maverick” is produced by Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
