Tyler Joseph, a varied pilot for Concern, on the “Never End” video

If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of a great artist’s music video, there’s never been a barrier to entry. Every day, thousands of fans are able to quickly sort their clips by creating a “never ending music video” by twenty-one pilots for their “Level of Level” music, which has been consistently aired on YouTube since it premiered on June 21.

The makers of the video admit that it could end well one day – the sun itself will eventually go out, right? – But they are determined that it will be a way for drivers to see as many lockdown-themed hits as possible as well as their own reflection, which is the most popular music of the year on alternative radio. Meanwhile, the less promotional but more intelligent alternative reality game (ARG) that preceded the innovative video was able to make twenty-one pilots ‘most interested’; Clue-hinting, early-adopting fans were the first to learn about it and be fed on video.

Diversity With One Pilot singer-songwriter Tyler Joseph and the video’s (and ARG) director Jason Jada (“take this lollipop” fame) talking about bringing the idea to life, he talked about bringing something that had never been done before. Here are some excerpts from the conversation.

Variation: Was this “never ending video” an idea you always kicked, or what happened after you recorded a “level of anxiety” and wondering how you could keep it alive?

JOSEPH: No. We’ve always felt that if we want to lose the opportunity to interact with fans at any time, we should replace it with something. It would have been on the March table. Now on our shows, even though we’re playing for more than five people, we still implement moments where we talk to fans and let them respond, show that we’re trying to make it more of a conversation than just standing there and acting. And so obviously when the epidemic hits and you move away from us, talk about a push. We found ourselves thinking on our feet: what would we replace it with? It’s always fun to let our fans know how smart they are, and in the past where we tried to be cryptic or talk in code or do something outrageous, it amazes us how they discover it.

There was a deep myth behind it with your last album and you have a fan base that likes clues or likes to get things out. So the game that plays. However the video itself is not so deep, so it appeals to someone more casual.

We wanted our fan base and our records to go deeper so anyone could go. And a lot of our original fans know what the details of the records are, they know what kind of busystore is behind all this, but then on the other hand, I say to my parents, “What’s going on? Like, what’s going on right now?” Maybe it’s a bit difficult to explain it to him. We dip our finger further into the front face, the normal stuff, I guess, but it never excites me completely. So we have to balance it.

Breaking the code I love the game so much, because it was really about them coming together and having a conversation and trying to work together to achieve something. And when it closes that path, it feels like a lot more pride to be part of this community. And this never-ending music video, it’s great to say that no one has ever really done anything like this before. But it fits in perfectly because it’s an opportunity for us to show off to fans of a cool nature like us.

We love any time that we can put in front of them. Not just because they’re so cool, but because I’m an insecure kid who doesn’t like to be the face of this kiss. And that’s definitely something I’ve always fought for and continue to do. But what is great is how these two things fed each other.

In the ARG game component, is there any clue or challenge that you enjoyed the most?

These kids are smarter, smarter than me. Even trying my best to stump them, they always find it somehow. One of my favorite things was creating the alphabet to spell an extra code. And one of the ways we’ve done that is to find spots on Google Maps that point to certain buildings, and if you turn on satellite mode where you can actually see the topography, you’ll see that the building actually looks like a letter. So it was fun to look for buildings that were shaped like certain characters. It got pretty intense.

We think it’s great that we have a fan base that encourages us to do just that and end up with just one moment where they can escape. For me, music has always been that. I’ve found that by trying to have a conversation with another person and try to escape from the reality that you may be in, you can create some music bigger than yourself that may not be the best head place.

The video has been billed as “never ending”. Infinity, for example, a real goal?

[Laughs.] I asked them about it and they said we would cross the bridge when we got there. You know, there’s a testing process. There is always someone to make sure they are sending the right thing. I don’t need to tell you that when we first made it, like “upload a video and it will come up on our youtube channel” of course people were trolling and all sorts of weird, coarse, crazy, weird things out there, that you could expect. But until the end, I don’t know. Maybe I’ll hire my little brother to do it for the rest of the time.

Many artists have a giant ship with them that they have to drive to release music on a dime. There are plenty of partners here, and it’s a tough thing to turn around quickly. And Josh and I have always kept things as vested as possible and as personal as possible. I didn’t even realize how lucky we were to continue this way until our music and our band. Apparently the news was breaking (about coronavirus lockdowns) and I wrote the excitement of this song right now and we have partners who know how to move fast. My idea is that we forgot that we were able to do it. When we first start, you write a song, you record it in your home, a friend of yours comes with a video camera and you just put it online. This moment was very beautiful with this song to remind us where we came from and how we released the music. It always makes me want to do it.

So what is your whole album going on?

Yes, currently working on new music. We plan to travel around the world, play festivals, see the markets of our kind that have been waiting for us this year. We were having lots of European festivals; We are going to do something in South America; We were going to be something in Russia. It is, I don’t know, perhaps – a word of hope – a blessing in disguise, the idea of ​​staying at the house where my studio is located and being able to write and publish music faster than events if things don’t run that way. And I’m a new dad. My one is 4 months old and this has been for the last four months, just to see her change every single day, I don’t know. I’m looking for positives at otherwise pretty annoying times.

How long have you been working on this lead?

I first contacted the record label, by Electra, by Fuel, by Fuel, when the song was already out. As we said, are there anything we can do to enable hard fans but also to reach new fans quick and what can we do fast? It basically took a little over four weeks to do the whole thing, so it was very, very, very fast. It’s quite a wide promotion, where we started a 24 hour livestream, it created an ARG, which was supposed to last a week, but the fan base swallowed it up in completely oured 2 hours. And then unlock the music video that they didn’t finish.

The game allowed people to solve puzzles and upload their videos ahead of time. But once the uninterrupted video is launched, anyone can upload it without playing, right?

That’s right. ARG and that initial activation was really a kind of underground; It didn’t get really high publicity. Fans brought it out with just one tweet of this kind that I believe Tyler had a fan base… and then once we’ve officially released the music video, anyone can take part. More than 100,000 have already been deposited in the first 48 hours. If you watch it long enough you will see that it is really attracting fans and new fans from all over the world and every region and it is quite fun to watch.

This is another way of entertaining. I mean, people have been stuck in their homes for the last few months and I think they’re hungry for stuff right now. I think we’ve all seen … as if we’ve reached the end of Netflix. So it’s kind of like giving fans something fun to swallow.

How many video contributions become cycling? What things do you have to repeat if people lack submission?

In one of its games we can get videos of about 80 people. So every four minutes you have 60 people there

The never-ending music video is powered by one of my longtime technology collaborators, Jason Nickel. We did the Emmy Award-winning “Take This Lollipop” [short film and app] Using its software. With this video we were able to capture landscape and portrait videos specifically and then use them in the right direction. So if we don’t have enough landscape videos, you’ll see your own two or three times until a new landscape video arrives.

Even though it is known that the image is getting smaller on YouTube or social media, people really like to shoot video on their phones with their cameras now.

Most people seem to be doing portrait videos. You know, the shooter in me always turns it into a landscape when I make a video, but I realized that Instagram and Snapchat and everything [made it so] That’s a whole new generation of people, portraits are really the way they shoot. That’s why we chose to create these kinds of animated templates that people can put in their videos, because we realized that YouTube is a traditional themed format, 16 by 9, but most people have portraits and would be really annoyed to see a complete music video that is just traditional There were all portrait videos in the format. So we created a really unique way to be able to display portraits in a few variations and templates.

When it came to setting up the game or puzzle aspect, were there any embedded clues that surprised you even more than others?

For ARG, we have hidden clues everywhere. You had to take a photo and it had to open a text editor and then there was Google Earth coordinates in a few thousand and a few thousand lines of code. You typed it and then you saw each building and a code that went there [resembled] A separate letter from around the world and we had the staff that you need to open an image and look at it in a spectrum and see if there is a code embedded in any audio. The fun part was taking a variety of ways to hide these clues and determine ways to give visitors a real stamp.
