Is Tom Hanks ever going to retire?

At 66, the actor has appeared in nearly 80 feature films during his four-decade tenure in Hollywood. At the New York premiere of his new film “A Man Called Auto,” Hanks expressed doubts about the possibility of retirement.

“No, I have no desire [to retire]” said Hanks diversity Monday night. “I’m not working for work. I am in a very fortunate position. It had to be fabulous. Rita and I talk about it all the time, which can only work for two reasons: it will be good or it will be fun. And if neither of these, I’ll stay home until the cows come. I don’t need to do anything.”

The situation was much different for Otto, the character Hanks played in a reboot of the Swedish film “A Man Called Ove.” The story begins with Otto leaving his company because he was no longer worth it.

“There was a forced retirement in the original movie in Sweden,” Hanks said. “You’ve got a certain age, you’re out! And that’s the way things work. Here, he was bought out, he took a severance pay – he didn’t want to leave. There was no reason to stay because they no longer believed in him.

As Otto struggles to cope with the recent death of his wife Sonia, his heart begins to soar when a new family moves in across the street. Mariana Trevino, who plays Otto’s bubbly neighbor, said the film spotlights the overlooked value of a strong community.

“We’ve become more fragmented as a society around the world, so it’s great to bring this up [community] Forward as a value,” Treviño said. “We are all connected beneath our differences. In order to move forward in our lives, we need each other’s love to connect with our own feelings of love — and we tend to forget that. We need to bring back this divisiveness. Be open to.”

Another neighbor Otto bonds with is Malcolm (McBayda), who is transgender and Sonia’s former student. Malcolm reveals that Sonia was the one who encouraged the school to accept their transgender identity.

“You don’t often see representation of transgender people, especially played by a transgender person like me, in a major film,” Baida said. “It’s a pretty prominent role, so it’s an honor to be on such a huge project and be able to represent the trans community to an audience that might not otherwise be open to LGBT people.”

Screenwriter David Magee added, “It’s ironic that this trans character, who has trouble with society and their relationship with their father, finds a father in Otto. Despite his anger and apparent disgust with the world, he is open to caring for other people because they need it.”

“A Man Called Auto” was a family affair for Hanks. His wife, Rita Wilson, served as a producer and wrote the Oscar-qualifying song “Til You’re Home.” Their youngest son, Truman Hanks, made his first major film appearance. He plays a younger version of Otto in a series of flashback scenes that add context to the character’s present-day discomfort.

Truman, 27, was asked by director Mark Forster to appear in the film over a cup of coffee. Although Truman said he would be open to more acting in the future, his chosen profession is a cinematographer.

“I’m jumping straight into the camera world, but we’ll see,” he said. “I will not rule anything out. If some great director who I really respect calls me for coffee, I won’t say no to it.”
